After the Orchard: A Russian Journal is based on Anthony Newfield’s experiences in Russia while studying at the Moscow Art Theatre. In the piece are interwoven excerpts from plays by Anton Chekhov, material from the author Mikhail Bulgakov, and poems by Boris Pasternak, Alexander Pushkin, and others that illuminate his experiences.

Originally from Northern California, Anthony Newfield, now resides in New York City. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he studied acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco before moving to New York. He received his MFA in acting from Carnegie Mellon University in conjunction with the Moscow Art Theatre. New York theatre credits include jobs ranging from Broadway (Tartuffe) to a SoHo art gallery (Mac Wellman’s The Bad Infinity). Regional theatre credits span the country including Death Defying Acts (Coconut Grove Playhouse, Miami), Arcadia (Huntington Theatre, Boston), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (TheatreWorks, Palo Alto), Damages (Los Angeles). International work includes The Normal Heart, Tom & Viv, Peer Gynt (Ireland) and The Grapes of Wrath (Russia). Film and TV credits include Diagnosis Murder, All My Children, One Life to Live; Farewell, Miss Fortune.

Rustem Galitch trained as an actor at the Maly Theatre in Moscow. He has performed his one-man poetry recitals in Moscow as well as throughout New York City.
