Gregory Meerovich Gordon, Maevka

Gregory Meerovich Gordon was born in Kovno, Lithuania. In 1929, he graduated from the Vitebsk Art School, made legendary by its founders and leaders such M. Chagall and K. Malevich, and still run by their former students at the time of Gordon’s schooling. Since 1927, Gordon actively participated in exhibitions with his urban, rural and industrial landscapes, and later with portraits of partisans, soldiers, workers, and state officials.  He lived in Moscow and became recognized for his gigantic thematic paintings, such as Meeting of Khasan’s Heroes with Collective Farmers of Far East or Dinner on the Frontline; and his Maevka. Year 1905 in Murom (1937) was a smaller version of a large-scale painting yet to come. 25 years later, Dressing Soldier (1962) was done in a fresh impressionist style.
