Vladimir Andreevich Favorsky, Capital Letter - Book Illustration
The prominent graphic artist Vladimir Favorsky was an influential figure in Soviet art of the mid-20th century. After studies at the University of Munich, the Sh. Khollosha private art studio and Moscow State University, Favorsky spent two years (1915-1917) fighting on the frontlines during WW1. In 1921, he became a professor of VKhUTEMAS. His first graphic works were produced in tradition of Mir Iskusstva, which associated him with romantic and historical themes. Favorsky became famous for his innovative approach to the old technique of etching. His work as a book illustrator allowed him to choose subjects from different periods of history, be independent of the restrictions of socialist realism, and to show a younger generations the way of the dissident life. As a teacher he inspired young artists, who later became non-conformists.
