Rothschild’s Fiddle centers on a 70-year-old coffin maker (known as the village curmudgeon) who lives in a town where people “die so rarely it’s annoying.” To pass his time, he plays the fiddle in a local Jewish band until one day Death brings him some surprising business.

The cast includes Valeriy Barinov, Alexey Dubrovskiy, Irina Nesterova and Igor Yasulovich. The design team for Rothschild’s Fiddle includes Sergei Barkhin (set), Tatiana Barkhin (costume), Gleb Filshtinsky (lighting) and Maria Bacharnikova (sound). Yana Ross serves as dramaturg.

The remainder of the Yale Rep season includes William Shakespeare's King Lear starring Avery Brooks (Paul Robeson, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"). Harold Scott will direct the Bard classic Feb. 13-March 13. Next The Violet Hour director Evan Yionoulis will head up Carlo Gozzi's The King Stag, March 26 April 17. To conclude the season, director Connie Grappo (pre-Broadway Little Shop of Horrors) will pilot the world premiere of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's The Mystery Plays. The co-production with Off-Broadway’s Second Stage Theatre is scheduled for an April 30-May 22 run.
